There are many differences between the different element types of Dog. Below is a broad description of the Dog personality.

The Dog is the eleventh sign of the Chinese horoscope. The Dog is Yin and is fixed to the Metal element. The characteristics of the Dog correspond to the occidental sign of Libra. Yin is negative, feminine, and associated with the Night. Subjective Yin signs trust their feelings about themselves and others. You tend to be more concerned with the spiritual than the physical. As all opposites attract in nature, Yin attracts Yang. The Metal element association bestows an ambitious and hard working nature. Metal people tend to be self-reliant and rigid in their outlook and find it difficult to compromise. Metal people can be more materialistic than others.

The Dog is characterized as being the most reliable, honest and non-materialistic of people. Resolute, unpretentious and with a strong sense of justice, the Dog will go to great lengths to avoid a fight, but is not afraid should one be unavoidable. A Dog will more often than not choose to walk the middle ground, not through fear of making a decision, but because of a natural ability to objectively see both sides of an argument. Others should consider themselves lucky to count you as a friend.

Being highly idealistic, it is not unusual for Dogs to become cynical later in life. You speak plainly and appreciate this attribute in others. The objectivity of Dogs is limiting in some ways, sometimes making it difficult to see "between the lines" of a situation. To a Dog, there is only black and white, no shades of gray in between. Most things in a Dogs life, including how others are perceived, reside in neat pigeon-holes in the mind. The military, legal and medical professions have a surfeit of crusading Dogs.

Your strong sense of duty will invariably take precedence over personal ambitions. Surprisingly, you can be quite impatient characters at times and can direct matters forcefully, and loudly, to a quick conclusion. You can function well in harsh environments for long periods. Perhaps this is a reflection of the Dog's underlying pessimism. Dogs don't think life is tough - they know it is.

In matters of love, Dogs both male and female do not enter into relationships quickly or lightly. A Dog woman will invariably be a friend before she is a lover, but once love is given it is deep and lasting. Dogs get along best with Horse and Tiger people. Relationships with Dragons and Sheep can be difficult. The Dog parent is easily manipulated by the child. Dog children are mostly cheerful and undemanding. They respond to encouragement more than others.
