Jupiter is the god of light and weather; in earlier times, it was a heavenly enforcer who hurled thunderbolts at the wayward. Jupiter is the fifth planet and is clearly visible because of its enormous size. It has 16 moons: Metis, Adrastea, Amalthea, Thebe, Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto, Leda, Himalia, Lysithea, Elara, Ananke, Carme, Pasiphae and Sinope. Jupiter takes about 12 years to orbit the Sun and spends about a year in each sign, sometimes much longer.

Physically, Jupiter is associated with the liver and studied knowledge of all kinds. Jupiter is the planet of the philosophers. It is most at home in the signs of Sagittarius and Pisces where its positive side of generosity, kindness and joviality are best expressed. When stressed, Jupiter can tend to make us overly self-indulgent and have extreme behaviors and attitudes. Many gambling addicts have a poorly aspected Jupiter in their birth charts.
