Sagittarius is the ninth sign of the Western zodiac. In ancient Greek mythology, Cronus, the father of the gods, who was surprised while making love to Philyra, turned himself into a stallion and galloped off. Cheiron the half-man, half-horse offspring was famous as a scholar and mystic. Achilles, Jason and Aneus were raised by Cheiron.
Sagittarius is a Mutable, Fire, Masculine sign ruled by Jupiter. Those born with the Sun in Sagittarius are characterized as being philosophical lovers of freedom and great explorers. Mutable signs are associated with the ability to adapt to situations and the behavior of others, being broad thinkers and compromising. Fire signs imply enthusiasm above all, and can be entertaining and optimistic. They are good at starting new projects, but not as good at finishing them. The Masculine association is one of directness and outgoing, extroverted behavior. Apparently confident, although appearances can be deceiving.
Interpretation of the natal chart can be thought of in terms of three major facets of the individual. How you appear to others, your innermost desires and aspirations, and what you are really like. The characteristics associated with your Sun sign, Sagittarius, are not absolutes and should be seen only as likely dispositions.
Duality is the keyword in the description of the Sagittarian personality. Perceived as being careless and pleasure seeking, especially in their youth, Sagittarians will generally mature into something quite the opposite. Harnessing and focusing the considerable intellect that is present in most Sagittarians is the key to satisfaction in life. At best, you are open-minded, sincere, dependable, optimistic and jovial. At your worst, tactless and restless, behaving in a careless and irresponsible manner. You can also be an extremist and prone to exaggeration. Like the wild horse, Sagittarians are difficult to restrict and tie down, either physically or emotionally. Personal freedom is of prime importance to those of the ninth sign. The intellect of Sagittarians needs constant stimulation. Exploration and understanding will figure strongly throughout life. You will tend to do more than one thing at a time, in many cases overlooking or ignoring the details. The ranks of famous teachers, philosophers, priests and lawyers contain many Sagittarians.
Partners of Sagittarians should be aware of their restlessness and need to be free. Jealousy, possessiveness and smothering affection will drive the Sagittarian away. Providing intellectual stimulation will perhaps be more important than the physical aspects of the relationship (which should be very lively).
The Sagittarian parent will enjoy his or her children, but should beware of placing too many demands on them at an early age. Mostly, parenthood will be a great pleasure. The Sagittarian child should be naturally intelligent, and somewhat wild. Parents of such children are well advised to provide appropriate physical outlets for the abundance of energy.
